Custom Keychain Materials Compared, Acrylic vs Wood vs Metal (Which One Should You Actually Pick)

Note from Ariel. We've made over 4,000 custom keychains in our San Leandro, California workshop in the past two years. Roughly 70 percent are acrylic, 20 percent wood, 10 percent brushed metal. The split tells you what most people pick. It doesn't tell you what's right for you.

This guide is the same one I'd give to a friend who texted me "hey, what kind of keychain should I get my mom?" Direct, honest, no upsell.

Acrylic, the photo specialist

If you want a photo on the keychain, acrylic is the only sensible answer. UV inkjet prints full color directly into the surface, which means a real photograph (or hand drawn cartoon, which we also do) reproduces with detail you cannot get on wood or metal.

Acrylic also lights up well. We've had customers add a small LED keychain ring and the photo glows from behind. Wood absorbs light. Metal reflects it. Acrylic transmits it.

The downside: acrylic scratches easier than metal. Daily key carry on a car keyring will leave fine surface marks within 6 to 12 months. Most customers don't mind. A few do, and they should pick metal.

Our most popular acrylic option is the Custom Cartoon Acrylic Keychain from Photo. Up to 3 figures (people or pets), hand drawn cartoon style, UV printed on 3 mm clear acrylic.

Wood, the warmth pick

Wood feels different in your pocket. There's no other way to put it. The grain warms to your hand. Walnut darkens just slightly over years of handling, which most owners find pleasant. Maple stays light. Cherry develops a reddish patina.

Engraving on wood produces a high contrast burn that doesn't fade or rub off. Names, dates, initials, short quotes all look great on wood. Photographs do not. The laser can render a halftone version but it never looks like a real photo, and we usually steer customers away from photo on wood unless they specifically want the rustic, woodcut look.

Wood is also more eco friendly than acrylic by a meaningful margin. We source from sustainable suppliers when possible. If that matters to you or your gift recipient, this is the material to pick.

Pair a wood keychain with our custom long distance keychain (state outline + initial) for the strongest text+symbol combination we make.

Brushed metal, the buy it for life option

Aluminum doesn't scratch the way acrylic does. It doesn't dent the way you'd expect. Drop it on concrete and the corner picks up a tiny ding, but the engraving stays sharp. Customers who pick metal usually pick it because they want a keychain that will be the same in 10 years as it is today.

The catch: it's heavier. Some people love this (it signals quality). Others prefer the feather light feel of acrylic. There's no objective answer. Pick up something brushed aluminum at the hardware store and decide if you like the weight.

Engraving on aluminum is laser deep. The mark is dark and crisp. We can do up to 4 lines of text plus a small icon (heart, anchor, paw print, mountain) without the design feeling crowded.

Real customer scenarios from our shop

Long distance couple

Best pick: matching pair, one acrylic with a cartoon of them, one wood with the cities they live in. The combination tells the story two ways. We've shipped this pair maybe 80 times.

Memorial keychain for a parent

Best pick: brushed metal with name, dates, and a meaningful symbol. The weight matters here. Customers tell us they like feeling it in their pocket. Acrylic feels lighter than the gravity of the moment.

Toddler birthday gift for grandparents

Best pick: acrylic with the toddler's photo, hand drawn cartoon style. Grandparents love the photo specifically. They show it off. Wood and metal don't carry the photo factor.

Sales rep prize at work

Best pick: brushed metal with company logo and rep's name. Looks serious. Lasts forever. Reads as a real award, not a tchotchke.

Hardware: the boring but important detail

Most online keychains use a bargain split ring that bends within 6 months. We use a 30 mm key ring made of nickel plated steel, plus a 25 mm chain link to give the keychain some swing. The combo lets the keychain hang properly off a key fob without rattling the keys against each other.

If you've ever had a custom keychain where the chain part broke after 2 weeks, that's a hardware issue, not a material issue. Ask your maker what they use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I have a photo on a wood keychain?

Technically yes. We can laser engrave a halftone (dotted) version of a photo onto wood, but it looks like a vintage etching, not a real photo. If you want a clear, recognizable photo, pick acrylic.

Will the metal scratch my car key fob?

Brushed aluminum is softer than your car key blade. It can leave a fine mark on plastic fobs over years of contact. If your fob is a leather wrapped or soft-touch type, no issue.

What if I want both a name and a photo?

Acrylic is the only material where we can put a photo and printed text together cleanly. We can also engrave a name on the metal ring of a wood or metal keychain, but the photo limit on wood/metal is real.

How long do they take to make?

3 to 5 business days for any material in our San Leandro workshop. Acrylic involves a digital proof step (1 to 2 days for illustration) before printing. Wood and metal go straight to laser once the layout is approved.

Do you ship outside the US?

We currently ship within the United States only. Delivery time depends on your distance from California, typically 2 to 7 business days from when production completes.

Where to start

If photo, go with the Custom Cartoon Acrylic Keychain. If text or initials, the Custom Long Distance Keychain (state outline + initial engraved) is the design we'd recommend first. Curious how we make them? See our workshop process page.
